Last Friday, I had surgery at Bronson Methodist Hospital. I went through a period of learning and decision-making prior to that. While in town on business, I decided to stay here in Kalamazoo and put myself in the care of the wonderful people at Bronson. I traveled to the U of M system and got a second opinion there. I also had access to the number one rated surgeon in this field, who is now at Beaumont as Chief Medical Officer. Certain friends and relatives of mine from other places urged me to travel wherever necessary to get the absolute best care possible.
I had my surgery scheduled at Bronson, but I could have cancelled and moved it to any of the other medical centers if I felt they could do a better job for me. My decision involved about a month and a half of intensive research, conversations with several doctors I know and countless hours of just thinking it over. I know I made the right decision to go to Bronson.
Meeting Dr. Miller and Dr. Fabi and hearing them describe what they do, made a difference. Just hearing them as real people, describing how they felt about a person in their care, and how they would use the tools at their disposal, gave me a tremendous sense that they could be trusted. This window into the workings of Bronson, and most importantly the people that do the work there, came at just the right time for me. It helped solidify my decision to stay in my home town for a surgery that would have a very significant impact on my life.
The bigger hospitals may have an easier time getting their rankings high in U.S. News or some other “Top 100″ list (although Bronson is good at that, too). In my case, Bronson had to be compared to one of the best research hospitals in the country and a surgeon who was at the top of the national rankings. It’s hard, as a lowly patient, to not let those factors dominate.
Everything went really well for me and I’m now on the mend. I was completely thrilled with everything and everyone that I came in contact with at Bronson–at every level. I am really glad that I had the opportunity to come to Kalamazoo and experience all that Bronson has to offer for myself.
